"Vardı" is thus the past (or the imperfect) of "var". The past of "yok" is "yoktu".

Kahvesi yoktu.	Kahvesi yoktu.	Bahçeleri vardı.	They had a garden.
Makasınız vardı.	You had the scissors.	Tabakları yoktu.	They had not a plate.

The possessive suffix is usually applied to the last noun.

Çay ve şekerimiz vardı.	Çay ve şekerimiz vardı.
Süt ve kahvemiz vardı.	We had milk and coffee.
Ekmek ve peynirim vardı.	I had bread and cheese.
Bira ve şarabımız yoktu.	We had neither beer nor wine.

The interrogative tense of "vardı" is "var mıydı" (vahr-mıy-dı); that of "yoktu" is "yok muydu" (yohk-mooy-doo)

Kahvemiz var mıydı?	Had we got coffee?
Kitabınız yok muydu?	Had you not got a book?
Ekmeğin var mıydı?	Had you got bread?
Şekeriniz var mıydı?	Had you got sugar?
Evet,şekerimiz vardı.	Yes, we had got sugar.
Hayır,çaymız yoktu.	No,we had not got tea.

There is also "narrative" ( or better a "hearsay") form of the past tense. It denotes uncertainity in regard to the deed. One narrates as he has not been a direct witness to the act. This form is used in general when the narration is rather made by hearsay.

The "hearsay" form of "vardı" is "varmış" (vahr-mısh). Taht of "yoktu" is "yokmuş" (yohk-moosh).

Paranız varmış.	(It seems that) you had money.
Anahtarın yokmuş.	( It seems that ) you had not o key.
Sütümüz yokmuş.	( It seems that ) we had not milk.
Sabunumuz varmış.	( It seems that ) we had soap.
Köpeği varmış.	( It seems that ) we had soap.

We’d like to emphasize that in practice, one doesn’t have to strictly consider the difference between the two past tenses all the time.
