Unit 12 - Changing Lifestyles

In the past, people did different things in their free times. In the past there was no TV or radio, so people listened to live music. In the past, friends and neighbours came together and did traditional parties. Neighbours were more important in the past. Children played outside in the past.

Nowadays, everyone watches TV in their free time. People don't visit friends, relatives and neighbours often. Children spend all their free time in front of the computer now.

İngilizce sohbet ederken veya geçmiş yaşamımızla ilgili bizi anlatan bir yazı yazarken kullandığımız bazı yapılar vardır. "Used to" kalıbı  ile, geçmişte sık yapılan, ama artık yapılmayan eylemler (bunlara geçmiş alışkanlıklar diyebiliriz) anlatılır. Used to kullanılınca, eylemin bugün devam etmediği anlaşılır.
We used to play football everyday.
I used to go fishing but now I don't go fishing.
I used to go fishing but now I don't.
I used to be a very good student. Now, I am not a student.
They used to play tennis.
We used to play in the garden and climb trees when we were young.

 
"used to" ifadesini olumsuz hale getirirken, geçmiş zaman için uyguladığımız kuralları uygularız;
cümleye "didn't" ekleriz. "did" kullanıldığı zaman "use to" olarak yalın halde kullanılmalıdır.
The students didn't use to play football in schoolyard.
He didn't use to get on a bus every morning.
I didn't use to like potatoes but now I like potatoes.
You didn't use to get bad grades when you were a student.

 
"used to" ifadesini soru haline getirirken ise, cümlenin başına  "did" ekleriz. Yine "did" kullanıldığı zaman "use to" olarak kullanılmalıdır.
 
-Did you use to ride a bicycle?
-Yes, I used to ride a bicycle.

 
-Did the team use to win a lot of games?
-Yes, the team used to win a lot of games.

 
-Did the man use to come home late?
-No, he didn't use to come home late.

 
-What did those kids used to do?
-They used to play at the park.

 
-What didn't the cars used to have?
-The cars didn't use to have radios.
 

A lot of things changed in our lifestyle. We used to write letters to people. Now we call them on mobile phones or send them emails. It is faster to use the new methods. We used to play in the streets, but now, there are too many cars and it is dangerous in the streets. We used to have fewer appliances in our houses too.

Ayşe didn't use to work but she works now. She didn't use to eat olive oil much, but now, she uses olive oil a lot. She used to prepare her food in the past, now she buys her food.

"...........a nasıl giderim" diye sormak için "How can I get to........." kalıbını kullanabiliriz. Cevap verirken de emir cümlelerinden faydalanırız.
-Excuse me, how can I get to the sports center?
-Go straight and turn left at the hotel. Cross the bridge. It's on your right.
-Can you repeat that?
-Walk straight and turn left to the school road. Go over the bridge. The sports center is on your right.

-How can I get to the pond?
-The pond is on the other side of the river. Go straight and turn left at the hotel. Cross the bridge then turn left into the park. Walk straight and you'll see the pond in front of you.

 
-Where's the supermarket?
-It's next to the bank.
-Where's the bank?
-It's between the library and the supermarket.
-Where's the library?
-It's across the road from the restaurant.
